Most of chihuahuas are very greedy
for sweeties. We must remember that chocolate can be toxic to dogs and cats,
including chihuahuas. Specially because our breed is so small and eats very
much for them weight.
Chocolate maybe given mistakenly
to chis as treat, or they can steal it, and eat it.
Chocolate poisoning occurs most
frequently in dogs.
Theobromine is the toxic compound
found in chocolate.
About 1-4 hours after eating
chocolate may appear these signs of your chihuahua: vomiting, diarrhea,
weakness, increased thirst, weakness, difficult keeping balance,
hyperexcitability, muscle spasms, seizures, coma and death from abnormal heart
rhytm.
Toxicity of chocolate depends on
the amount and type of chocolate ingested: most poisonous chocolate is
unsweetened cocoa, then comes baking chocolate (dark chocolate), next
semisweet chocolate and last milk chocolate. Dark chocolate is actually 4
times more poisonous than milk chocolate.
If you suspect your chihuahua
may have ingested chocolate, call immediately your veterinarian or
animalhospital, and tell them the situation.
